Not Much, but A Lot

Since Russ went back on Monday, Sept. 17, not much seems to have happened. But upon reflection of the last couple weeks, maybe I'm wrong.

Russ was to fly out Monday night (the 17th). But the flight was cancelled - after I dropped him off and he had gone through security. This angered my loved one. I suppose some of that anger came from it happening the first time. Also, the anger was a result of the unknown and the frustrations that incur with it. He didn't know when he was going to get another flight.

I had found out that the flight was cancelled when I was getting into Chaska. He called and told me to pull over, letting me know the flight was cancelled. I pulled over in McDonalds' parking lot. I waited there till he called again with more news. He called me back, and told me that he had another flight scheduled for 6 a.m. He also told me he had been given vouchers for a room at the Radisson, Mall of America and a couple meal vouchers. I returned to the airport to pick him up.

I wasn't sure about this 6 a.m. flight business. We'd have to leave home around 3:30 a.m. That wouldn't leave us much time to rest, because we wouldn't get home till after 10 p.m.

After picking up Russ, we discussed these options. While still on I-494, but after the exit for the hotel, we decided that we should stay at the hotel overnight. So, I found an off ramp and turned around and went back to the M.O.A. area. We found the hotel and stayed overnight. Another decision had to be made. Was Russ going to take the shuttle to the airport that the hotel offers or was I going to drive him there. Russ opted for the shuttle. We got up at about 4:30. Russ waited for the shuttle and I went home.

I opted to go home the same time Russ waited for the shuttle. I thought if I'd sleep in till 8, I'd be going home during rush hour traffic. So, I was on the road shortly after 4:30 a.m. My drive home was a wet one. Most of the state was being rained on. So, the whole drive home was wet. Thankfully, the traffic was light. So the rain and darkness was the only major things that were stressful during that drive. I made it home before it was light out - around 6:30 a.m. Since I hadn't slept well the night before, I went to bed and slept for a couple more hours before starting the day.

Because we got 1.4 inches of rain on Tuesday, Sept. 18th, the rest of the week taken in stride, without any field work being done.

Russ came home again on Thursday night, Sept. 20th at around 11 p.m. This time I didn't go get him. Parson's had a gathering for the foremen and office people scheduled for Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday morning. So, the company arranged for Russ to fly back and for him to have a rental vehicle. The gather took place north of Bemidji. So, I appreciated that our vehicle was not going to be used and it would be available for my use.

Russ took some time Friday morning to wire up some extension cords - needed for running augers and whatever else. Then he packed up in the early afternoon and headed north.

He called me Friday night and Saturday night, late. It sounded like he was having a good time at the gathering and that the weekend was worthwhile.

He came home Sunday, Sept. 23rd morning, arriving around 10 a.m. He then spent some time resting. Then he cleaned up and packed, getting ready for his flight back. He left home around 3:30 p.m. for his 7 p.m. flight. Fortunately, this flight went fine. He called me when he got to Norfolk, letting me know he arrived o.k. and that there were only minor delays.

While Russ was finishing with the Parson's event, farming started. If I'm not mistaken, Jeff came here with his combine on Sunday afternoon. He combined our beans then and on Monday. He was almost finished in the late afternoon when we got another rain shower. The remaining beans remain in the field yet tonight (Tuesday, Sept. 25th.) I didn't check how much rain we got. But I know it's enough to delay the bean combining for at least another day. And since the weather isn't warming up much, it may be longer.

I haven't helped much with the farming this fall yet. Ronny knows I'm available. So, apparently, I'm not needed yet. I've been monkeying around the house most of the time. I've continued working on some quilting projects. I also sprayed the lower half of the house to control the Asian Lady Beetles. They are starting to be quite pesky again since lots of bean fields are being harvested.

Before I started spraying for them, they would thickly cover our living room ceiling, flying around being a nuisance. I couldn't sit in my recliner chair without having them fly into my hair or other parts of my body, resulting in getting bites from them. And they stink when they die or are brushed away. They also fly towards the lamp and living room lights. Not only do they die and pile up in the lamp/light shades. But, the odor is disgusting. I couldn't even have an open pop or a glass of water sitting around, for fear they land in it and I'd drink one - not a pleasant experience.

Last year was the first time we tried spraying for them. Russ and I sprayed the foundation and around window and door frames. It helped tremendously. Although we have some crawling around, the numbers are cut drastically. They usually end up dying outside, leaving a mess of dead ones on the step. That is managed with a broom. I don't concern myself with these pesky insects flying into my bed and crawling on me while I'm sleeping once I've sprayed for them.
Since the pests aren't severe yet, I'll mosey with finishing the job of spraying the 2nd level of the house for them. I'm almost out of the product. So, I'll have to get some more before finishing. If interested in the product, it's called BuggSlayer. I got it from the ACE Hardware store in Redwood Falls. I looked on line to see if I could find it there. But, I couldn't find it. So, it's possible that the product can't be gotten at just any ACE Hardware store. (CLICK ON THE PHOTO TO GET A LIST OF STORES THAT SUPPLY THE PRODUCT.)

I remember when I tried to get the product last year they were sold out of it quite quickly. So, I told them to reserve one for me the next shipment that came in. I'll find out if the product is in as great of demand this year as last year when I try to get another bottle.

But, for now, Not Much has been going on around here. Or maybe I'm mistaken. A Lot is happening. It's just not that exciting of news. -- If looking for exciting news, check out Nicholas' website. He's crawling now and popping teeth through his gums. Duane got a good picture of Nicholas inadvertantly showing off one of his uppers! Exciting stuff!
